No need to book! Just turn up and dance! Scroll down the page to find out what we do in class and what to wear! Beginners/Improvers classes are suitable for those who have never danced before, those who have some dance experience but who have never belly danced before, or if you would like to improve your basic technique. You will learn all the basic belly dance movements (including some American Tribal) how to link them together and some simple choreography. In these classes you will also start to play with some simple veil technique and learn about some of the traditions related to belly dance. Intermediate and advanced classes are suitable for those who have some dance experience and would like to learn advanced movements and more complex combinations. These classes expand upon what you have learned in the beginners class and Sarah will teach advanced choreography, how to dance "freestyle". You will start to work with other props such as cane, sword and finger cymbals as well as move on to more advanced veil techniques. Some of the students in the advanced class are involved in performing at various events or are working towards a professional career in belly dance: For these students, we cover all aspects of performance and working as a professional dancer. However, it is not compulsory to join in performances if you don't want to - you can just come and enjoy the classes!
All classes begin with a thorough warm-up for the entire body and finish with gentle yoga style stretches to ease away any tension and to aid relaxation. All you have to bring is the desire to learn and to have fun! What to Wear? - To begin with, most ladies wear something loose and comfortable - the sort of thing you would wear to the gym is fine. Make sure you wear a good bra! This helps to keep you supported and comfortable when practising shimmies, and will give you a good "uplift" when practising chest drops and lifts. In time you may want to invest in a coin encrusted hip scarf, which helps you to really "feel" the movements in your hips, and you can buy these directly from Sarah. We usually dance barefoot, but it is perfectly acceptable to wear ballet shoes, Greek sandles (both available from good dancewear shops). Some of the ladies have Hermes sandals, which protect your feet but give a barefoot look - these are available from Sarah by special order. Occasionally you may see Sarah dancing in high heeled shoes. In some forms of Belly Dance, such as Turkish, it is not only acceptable but expected for the dancer to wear high heels. This is only recommended when you have got some dance experience, and Sarah is always happy to advise you on the best type of shoes to buy and how high heels affect your dance moves. From there you are limited only by your imagination! Some ladies like to use their class as an opportunity to really dress-up and live out their fantasy, while others like to save their best outfits for high days and holidays - the choice is entirely yours!
Sarah is also available for private tuition and workshops - please call her on 01702 543 523 or 079101 32615 for details |
